Otoplasty

Due to genetic factors in the ear being the body’s balance and hearing organ, shape deformities may occur even from birth. Among all ear aesthetics, spoon-ear aesthetic surgery is most often performed. Although the image of spoon-ear differs from one person to another, There are two primary causes for prominent ears.

Loss of the delicate folds of the ear (loss of the antihelix seen above) causes the outer rim (helical rim) of the ear to flare out.

Too much cartilage in the conchal bowl of the ear causes the ear to be pushed out and forward.

The prominent ear problems may seem in the two ears of the person at similar or different levels. It exposes people to situations such as being teased and nicknamed since childhood. People often tend to hide their ears with their hair. It is common for women to leave their hair open and avoid hairstyles that will draw attention to prominent ears. In men, they prefer to lengthen their hair because the ears are more visible. Having an unpleasant physical feature creates self-confidence problems. Such restrictions and negativities in social life can cause psychological issues. With this surgery, whose medical name is otoplasty, you can get rid of the prominent ear disorder and achieve the desired aesthetic appearance.

Prominent ear aesthetics surgery mainly aims to obtain natural-looking ears that suitable for the face and head structure. Reshaping the undergrown auricle folds and narrowing the sticking-out angle between the auricle and the head allows aesthetic-looking ears to be achieved. The person’s self-confidence becomes powerful, so she/he feels more comfortable and successful in his social relationships. First of all, the self-satisfied individual feels happier.

The only condition for prominent ear surgery is that the ears have completed their development. Although it can be done at any age, the ideal age for children is around 4-5.

Although the development of ear cartilage in children continues until the age of 6, it is recommended to eliminate this problem in the pre-school period not to cause psychological problems in children. The child, who has a prominent ear and is uncomfortable with his appearance, may become reluctant and withdrawn in social relationships.

For these reasons, although the best age for surgery is pre-school, patients are generally adults. There is no age restriction for adults.

The problem is solved permanently with a small incision made behind the ear. While general anesthesia is preferred in young children for prominent ear aesthetic surgery, the operation is performed using local anesthesia or sedation in older children and adults.

Prominent Ear Surgery

The complication rate of the operation is low compared to other aesthetic interventions, and postoperative recovery is fast. After the operation, the ears are bandaged for 4-5 days. From the opening of bandages, it is recommended that the patient use a soft headband for a certain period.

Prominent ear surgery is one of the easiest and painless operations performed. The operation is performed by making an incision on the back of the ear connected to the head. The folds are reshaped to match the cartilage. The surgery also involves reducing the angle between the earlobe and cranium by incisions. The auricle is permanently corrected, and there is no possibility of recurrence. The scar behind the ear is not noticeable because it is located at the back of the ear and does not constitute an aesthetic concern for daily life. Although the patient can feel pain in the first days after the operation, it is preventable using simple analgesics.

How long does the surgical procedure take?

Different angular shape differences in the auricle require particular operation applications. Therefore, depending on the problem in the ear and its reason, the operation can take up to 1 hour.
